Rapid Development Tools for Online Learning

Summary

The projects in this course used Adobe Captivate. The animation slide was part of a larger project completed for Rapid Development Tools for Online Learning. The goal of this course was to complete an eLearning module of 60-80 slides using Adobe Captivate.

Process

The subject of my eLearning project was US Civics. The project was conceptualized as one of a series of middle school modules that would teach about the formation and foundation of the United States government.

The final project required the use of the skills developed throughout the course. The major requirements for this project included developing terminal and enabling objectives to support the learning goals, storyboarding, branching scenarios, an animation slide, audio slides, instructional remediation, and a quiz at the end of the instruction.

The project has not been updated to reflect the current administration.

Reflection

The need for increased civic education together with the ever-changing faces and laws in our federal and state governments makes the use of Captivate, or other rapid development tools, ideal.

Using rapid development tools has advantages. With little effort, users of rapid development tools, like Adobe Captivate, can rapidly change the content of a project, making a Captivate project relevant and meaningful to learners. Instead of hand coding, the templates provided in rapid development applications save time and money. Teachers and designers can quickly develop learning modules that are specific to their needs. Additionally, most rapid development applications can be used across a variety of eLearning platforms. Most importantly, projects can be developed when the dissemination of information must be done quickly and across platforms that reach a large-number of people.

I was also able to apply many of the skills from other courses while developing the civics module. Audio and visual aids were edited using skills taught in the digital media course. A conceptual analysis was made to help determine the content. Task analysis and formative/summative assessment concepts were used to establish the objectives and checks-for-understanding. On a larger-scale I could see the application of project management processes.

I enjoyed this class. It was a rigorous course that applied my developed skill sets, introduced new concepts regarding learning and e-Learning, and allowed for a creativity.
