We all have days when we wake up and want to have a lazy day. There are also times during the day we experience that dreaded energy drain. Here are several ways maintain energy throughout the day.
- Cold Showers - Something as simple as turning the shower faucet from hot to cold can help wake up your body and make you feel more alert and focused.
- Stay Hydrated - Dehydration can drain your energy. Our bodies are composed of 65% water. Pale-yellow is a normal urine color. If your urine is dark yellow, that’s a sign of dehydration. There are times we might confuse thirst for hunger. Next time you’re feeling hungry, try drinking a glass of water. Drink water before, during, and after your workouts and meals. Dehydration can also increase cortisol levels. If you’re feeling stressed, drink a glass of water.
- Get Physical - In addition to lifting weights or working out, something as simple a walking or a short yoga routine can increase your energy. Remember that activity feeds on activity.
- Caffeinate - Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. – A quick note: Don’t have caffeine as soon as you wake up. Get yourself moving and drink water before you have caffeine. Limit your caffeine intake to 2-4 cups a day.
- Eat - Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining and increasing your energy level. It’s very important to get in all the macronutrients. Don’t skimp on carbs, fats, or proteins; all are important to your body. More importantly, make sure all your food is dense in micronutrients.
- Manage Stress - Stress is the result of elevated cortisol levels in our bodies. Cortisol is a stress hormone and can even increase sugar cravings. It’s important to relax and make sure you’re getting enough rest. Meditation and yoga are great ways to manage stress .
- Sleep - Make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night. Most of us need at least 8-9 hours of sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep during the night, try taking a short nap during the day. Taking a nap can help you energize.
